FRAUD & SCAM Alert!

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

AUGUST, 2008 - ATTENTION SELLERS & BUYERS

We have recently seen cases of SCAM artists, posing as sellers on our system. These fake-sellers create ads on our system using stolen credit card data. In ALL cases we have deleted these SCAM ads as soon as we become aware of their existence and have reported the incident to the SAPD. Buyers need to excercise caution when they discover ads that appear to be "too good to be true" or when, after contacting the seller, they discover that the seller is located overseas.

The following Checklist is for Protecting Against SCAMMERS:

1. Trust your instincts - if it appears too good to be true - it probably is.

2. Deal only with local buyers and sellers (Lets face it - unless your vehicle is a rare classic - no real overseas buyer would be interested.)

3. NEVER wire funds to a distant (overseas) buyer, via Western Union or any other carrier

4. Be wary if the other party wants to use an escrow service such as BidPay, Squaretrade, or even PayPal. Many online escrow services are FRAUDULENT sites operated by scammers. If you must do a transaction with a distant seller - insist on using a legitimate escrow service such as www.escrow.com

5. NEVER give out personal financial information (eBay or PayPal info, chequing account number, SIN, etc.)

6. Beware of buyers or sellers that want to complete the transaction on an URGENT basis

7. Beware of sellers that want a down-payment to hold a vehicle

8. Beware of Cashiers Cheques - these are often very convincing fakes. Banks will often cash these fake cheques and then hold you responsible when the cheque fails to clear - sometimes as much as a few weeks later.

9. Beware of sellers or buyers that do not want to meet "face to face"

ATTENTION!

Please be aware that certain parties may be using the autoadstrader.co.za Messaging system to make an offer on your vehicle, while indicating that they will transfer money to your bank account, from overseas buyers. We believe this to be a SCAM and an attempt to gather personal information from you, the seller. Our log files indicate that this user is accessing autoadstrader.co.za system from a server in Hong Kong and England. If you have received an inquiry along these lines, we recommend that you do NOT divulge any personal information, what-so-ever. Our secure messaging system means that your email address is NOT available to any third party. As an added precaution autoadstrader.co.za will begin tracking IP addresses on all incoming messages.
